Licence

Angling licence requires passing the angler exam (open from age 14), run by the lower fishing authorities or recognised examiners; issued without time limit. No licence needed for 'Friedfisch' (non-predatory) angling. Youth licence from age 8 (until 18) for non-predatory angling. Fees not stated in the law text.

Visitors

No separate tourist licence: people without main residence in Germany staying only briefly may angle without a licence (BbgFischG §17(4) no.5). A water permit and fishing levy rules still apply.

Notes

BbgFischO, last amended 24 Aug 2026. Licence vs permit: the Fischereischein is a personal, state-issued licence; the Fischereierlaubnis/Angelkarte is a separate permit sold by the owner or tenant of a specific water. You normally need both. Local waters (club/lease rules, Hegeplan, local orders) may be stricter; the conditions on your water permit always apply on top of state law.
